Being a true leader isn't just about holding a position. Effective leadership is measured by how much a person is respected and followed by their team. There are five levels of leadership that reflect the quality of the relationship between leaders and their followers.

At the first level , leaders are respected because of their position. This is the most basic level. People follow out of compulsion or structural obligation. There's no emotional connection, just a formality.
At the second level , leaders are valued for their relationships. Here, leaders begin to build personal closeness. Warmth, empathy, and communication are key to building trust.
At the third level , leaders are valued for their performance. They become role models for their ability to demonstrate tangible results, work hard, and lead the team to significant achievements.
At the fourth level , leaders are valued for their careers. They are perceived as having the power and intention to help subordinates develop, advance, and achieve a better future.
At the fifth level , the highest, leaders are valued for their respect. Even without their presence, the team continues to perform optimally because the values, culture, and spirit they instill are firmly embedded.
