Amidst the fast-moving times, the TanahLiat 9 ceramics group remains steadfast as a platform for ceramic artists who want to continue creating and developing. Formed from the spirit of togetherness among fellow students, TanahLiat 9 not only preserves the heritage of ceramic art but also continues to adapt to the dynamics of today's art and technology world.
Maintaining Tradition Amidst Innovation
Unlike other art mediums that have developed rapidly thanks to technological advances, ceramics still relies on the artist's manual skills. "Ceramics, unlike other mediums, develops rapidly. It prioritizes the development of the skills of each individual artist," explained Ms. Antin Sambodo. The tools used can be very simple, as the artist's own hands are the most important element.

However, this doesn't mean TanahLiat 9 is closed off to the times. For marketing, they follow current trends, such as utilizing social media, marketplaces, and art exhibitions. In terms of products, TanahLiat 9 continues to develop works that are relevant to functional trends, without losing the distinctive characteristics and styles of each member.
A Meaningful First Step

TanahLiat 9's first exhibition journey began in 2006, when they had the opportunity to appear at Bentara Budaya Jakarta. This moment was very memorable because it not only served as an initial publicity experience for the community, but also strengthened the bonds between its members. "It felt great to be able to exhibit with fellow students. It was more intimate and strengthened the interpersonal relationships of Tanah Liat 9," said Mrs. Antin. Furthermore, the appreciation received from visitors at that time was a great encouragement, especially since at that time ceramic art was not yet widely sought after and the number of ceramic artists was still very limited.
Achievements and Expansion of Works

In the past two years, TanahLiat 9 has begun exploring broader art forms through collaborative installations. Several of their works have been curated and exhibited in Yogyakarta and Jakarta, and they have received invitations from several renowned galleries. TanahLiat 9 has not only made inroads domestically but has also penetrated the international stage. During the pandemic, they participated in the online exhibition Ceramic Congress, alongside ceramic artists from around the world.
Social and Educational Mission
TanahLiat 9 goes beyond creating art; it also pursues an educational and social mission. They aim to bring ceramic art closer to the wider community, changing the perception that ceramics are too difficult and fragile a medium. "High-fired ceramics can last for hundreds, even thousands of years, as long as they don't fall and break," asserted Ibu Antin, refuting the notion that ceramics are not durable.

They also strive to encourage ceramics students to continue creating and to remain confident in their choices as ceramic artists. Through exhibitions, education, and collaborations, TanahLiat 9 strives to demonstrate that ceramic art has significant appeal and potential, both artistically and commercially.
