Sabeni was a legendary martial artist from Tanah Abang, Jakarta, who was widely known before World War II. He was born around 1860 in the Kebon Pala area to Canam and Piyah. From a young age, Sabeni was known as a formidable silat expert, particularly with his signature moves, such as Kelabang Nyebrang (Central Centipede) and Merak Ngigel (Merak Ngigel ). These moves were renowned for their speed and agile, tight hand movements, reflecting effective and practical fighting techniques.

Sabeni's name became known to the Betawi people after he defeated a champion from Kemayoran. This incident occurred when he was proposing to the daughter of a famous figure nicknamed the "Tiger of Kemayoran." This victory further expanded his reputation as a champion. Sabeni was also known for his bravery in facing foreign warriors. One notable moment was when he faced a Chinese kuntau expert brought in by Dutch officials. His goal was to thwart Sabeni's attempt to train Betawi youth in martial arts.

Not stopping there, at the age of 83, Sabeni still demonstrated his prowess by defeating judo and karate fighters brought by the Japanese invaders to challenge him. He remained active in teaching martial arts throughout Jakarta until his death. Sabeni died on August 15, 1945, and was buried in the Tanah Abang area. As a token of appreciation for his services, the name of the street where his grave is located, previously named Jl. Kuburan Lama, was changed to Jl. Sabeni by the Jakarta government.
