Jakarta has numerous museums, particularly in the city area. There are over 50 museums of various types. The Jakarta Provincial Government, through the Jakarta Cultural Agency, manages quite a number of museums. Museums under the agency's supervision include the Jakarta History Museum (Fatahillah Museum), the Wayang Museum, the Fine Arts Museum, the Ceramics Museum, the Maritime Museum, the Inscription Museum (Park), the Textile Museum, the Juang '45 Museum (Building), the MH Thamrin Museum, and the Jakarta History and Culture Information Center.

Based on the history of its founding, Jakarta is a city with a fairly comprehensive history, spanning from prehistoric times to the present. Museums selling these historical objects from the city's founding offer visitors a wide variety of experiences. For example, the Jakarta History Museum, located on Jalan Taman Fatahillah, covers over 13,000 square meters.

The building features 17th-century architectural style. Formerly known as Sradhuis, or City Hall, the museum exhibits various objects, including Jakarta's history, archaeological excavations, antique furniture dating back to the 18th century, ceramics, pottery, and stone inscriptions. The collections are housed in various rooms, including the Jakarta Prehistory Room, the Sultan Agung Room, and the MH Thamrin Room.

There are also various collections of Betawi culture, various types of Dutch-era currency (numismatics), and a pedicab. The museum now includes a statue of the god Hermes, formerly located at the Harmoni intersection, and the Si Jagur cannon, believed to possess magical powers. There's also a former underground prison once considered a den of snakes and bandits.
